After training many puppies and dogs, I'm eager to pass on my knowledge of how to select the best pup for you, regardless of whether you opt for a 9-week-old pup from a breeder, or a 9-year-old dog from a rescue. Lifestyle, time, house versus apartment, kids, other pets- all of these factors influence the ability of both dog and owner to adapt to one another. Even if you are set on a specific type of dog, choosing where they come from can make a big difference in their health and temperament. It's important to know what red flags to look for in order to avoid supporting puppy mills and taking home a pet that may have severe physical or mental wellness issues that most owners are not prepared to deal with - a pattern I've seen play out all too many times, sadly. Note: as a former rescuer, I also know the red flags in unethical "rescues" that do not correctly assess whether their dogs will be a good match for you or your lifestyle.
Although I have lived in East Greenwich for 14 years and am aware of our wonderful community members, I do not have associations with any local breeders or rescues at this time, in order to remain fully neutral. I will never accept "kickbacks" or incentives for matching dogs to owners. A flat fee from the owner is the only compensation involved in my personalized pup-matching assistance.
Factors taken into consideration as I assist you in the search:
Living space (own, rent, house, apartment, fenced yard or not, city vs suburban)
Time budget (realistic audit of time available to devote to training, exercising, how much dog will be alone)
Family makeup (kids, other pets, or family members who will be involved in care)
Breed compatibility assessment (working, sporting vs. non-sporting, herding, toy, terrier, etc.)
You'll be provided with the materials and education necessary to choose the right pup for you, including summaries of available and upcoming litters, prices, and time budget necessary for training to tailor to your specific lifestyle. Choosing right from the beginning can make all the difference in the world when it comes to satisfaction in your home life with your pet(s).
